Meet Sam Mindlin – Founder & Master Club Builder
I’ve spent most of my career helping golfers understand their equipment and unlock better performance through better builds. After years of fitting, teaching, and building for golfers of all skill levels, I saw the need for a specialized, precision-focused workshop right here in Volusia County.
Precision Golf Works is my way of bringing tour-quality builds to everyday golfers.

Do modern golf clubs hit the ball further? For the most part, the answer is no, especially in the irons. The golf industry needs you to see increases in distance over time, so what have they done? They have tweaked the lofts and lengths of our golf clubs. Over the past 30 years or so, we’ve gone up two numbers in our irons. What happens? We have to buy hybrids and fairway woods at the top end of our bags and more wedges at the bottom edge to fill the gaps that have been created. Know this when you are going to a fitting, especially if your goal is more distance. What really helps with distance is the shaft and getting it lighter and with a softer flex. Getting the shafts that match modern golf clubs will help tremendously and help you shoot lower scores.

Myth: The lower the loft on your driver, the farther the ball will go. This can be true for touring professionals or for golfers with a very high angle of attack. But for most of us, loft is our friend in getting distance, especially with the modern golf ball, which spins much less than the balls played in the late 1990s and before. An optimal launch angle is critical for maximizing the distance you can achieve. And if you lower that launch angle below what is optimized for you, you are leaving yards on the golf course. This is why a fitting with a launch monitor and feedback from a professional fitter is crucial for you to play your best game.

These are the best putters you may have never heard of. I work with @golfsub70 and sell their irons, woods, and wedges, which are all of amazing quality, and I've now added their putters to my fitting arsenal. These putters are built amazingly well, as they are 100% CNC-milled from a solid billet of 1045 Carbon Steel and made here in the USA in Sycamore, Illinois. What is more amazing is the price. Most models are under $200! All the putters include a Headcover and, if they have weights, a weight kit. Normally, you have to spend another $50 or more on that kit from the major brands. Check them out at golfsub70.com, or if you are in the central Florida area, come see me to get fit.

If you are not ready to go to graphite shafts just yet but need a little help and a lighter shaft, Nippon has got you covered. The Nippon Zelos 7 line of shafts is amazingly built and has flexes in Senior, Regular, and Stiff. They are built incredibly well to within very tight tolerances. I’ve reshafted a few sets, and my customers couldn’t be happier.

Here we are talking about some of the best options for wedge shafts that we fit a lot of people into. Of course, the best wedge shaft is the one you fit into. But these are shafts that many players fit into and seem to like best. Let us know what shafts you play in your wedges and why.

Swing weight is not as important as a lot of golfers may think. When getting fit for clubs, swing weight rarely comes up because we are focusing on results and finding a head/shaft/grip combo that best fits your swing. If you fit into a C8 swing weight for a given combination, so be it, as long as the results are what you want to achieve. Swing weight is only important, in my opinion, in the build process. I make sure your irons' swing weights match across the set and that there are no outliers, so you have a consistent feel from club to club. I recommend letting the fit decide your swing weight, not the other way around.

As we are heading into spring and then summer, make sure to take care of your clubs to get the most length out of them. One thing to do, especially when the weather gets over 85 degrees out, is to leave them in the trunk of your car or the back of your truck. What can happen is severe rust pitting, which will permanently damage the face of the clubs and also the shafts. Then you can also experience annoying ferrule creep. Ferrules are becoming increasingly important for brands like Ping, PXG, and Callaway, as they are essential for keeping the shaft centered in the hosel. Take care of your clubs, and they’ll take care of you!

What should the lie angle be of all of your clubs? If you got a fitting with a 7 or 6 iron and were fit 2 degrees upright from standard, should all of your clubs be 2 degrees upright from standard? For most golfers with regular swing speeds and up, the answer is no. This is subjective and different for every player, and also based on shaft weight. What most of my builds and elite players' builds have is a typically flatter lie in their wedges. The reason is deflection. At impact, the shaft bows slightly downward (toe down), which affects your dynamic lie angle. When you get to the shorter clubs, they deflect less because of lower swing speeds. The usual rule is to make your wedges 1 degree flatter than your irons. So in most builds, if the golfer fits into a 2-degree upright lie angle, if I’m doing their wedges and specifically scoring wedges, I’ll put them at 1 degree upright from standard and go from there.
